Destination Shellaligan Loop
Date 15 Feb, Wednesday

Contact Info brenthenrys@gmail.com or text: 250-205-1106. Please contact the coordinator by Monday night.
Description This will be the shorter loop, most often started near the second parking lot, with a short walk down the road to access the coastal trail. This follows the shoreline and rocky outcrops to the point near the entrance to Village Bay. It then continues to the oyster farm, from where we would head inland, up the drainage and further on to the parking lot. As this is done so often in this direction, we may do this trail in the opposite clockwise direction, just for a change, heading inland from the parking lot.
Meeting Place Heriot Bay store parking lot
Departure Time 10:00
Difficulty
Moderate, with pronounced step-ups over the rocks on the coastal section. Somewhat steep on parts of the interior section between the fish farm and the parking lot. Not a bad idea to bring hiking poles.
Costs None
Trip limits 10
Dogs? Yes, if under control. Owners must bring a leash along.
Notes: This will be in winter, but will proceed unless we have severe weather, such as strong coastal winds. Please bring good rain wear, proper footwear for rough walking and spare clothing. this will be a 2-3 hour walk, and will have a stop for lunch, most likely midway at the point.

Trip Report – Village Bay Main – 30 Dec 2022

Nine of us set out in rain gear for this rainy-day walk.  As it turned out, it didn’t rain.  And it wasn’t even windy.  It was just a simple, pleasant walk in the woods on a quiet logging road: Village Bay Main.  There were a few alders fallen across the road, but no problems.  We took the short trail that connects to the logging road which accesses the Shellaligan trail system and then returned to the vehicles.  After that, we made a quick visit to the big Douglas fir trees near pole 37 on Valdez Road.  (7.4 km; 2 hours, plus 200 m and 10 minutes for the tree)

Description We will start at the Morte Lake parking lot, cross the road and over the B3 bridge to access the Jackrabbit Trail. This starts off close to the creek and eventually heads inland up to the Yellow Mud Trail, which we will follow back down to Reed Lake at the Walcan Road. We then cross the road and follow the Mud Lake and Tripod connector over to the sandy beach/three bridges area of Morte Lake. This will be a good spot for a snack or light lunch (bring a pad or bag for sitting on the damp log here). From here we will continue to the east end of Morte Lake and start down the main trail to the parking lot. At the Lower Dead Fish intersection, we will cross the creek and continue down to the parking lot. This route is mainly forested with occasional views of the creek and Morte Lake.
Meeting Place Heriot Bay Store parking lot
Departure Time 10:00
Difficulty
Intermediate, due to length.
Costs
Trip limits 10.  We will try to accommodate those who are interested.
Dogs? Yes, but under control or on leash. No running through the group. Owner must carry a leash, for emergency reasons.
Notes: Waterproof boots are advised, as the trail can have standing water. Good rain gear is important, and if rainy or colder, its not a bad idea to bring a thermos with a hot beverage. a seat pad is good idea for sitting on damp logs at the lake. This will go ahead even if it rains, as long as conditions are not too extreme. Bring rain pants for a clear day, as yellow Mud has lots of wet ferns close to the trail.
