Description Visit some of Quadra’s Quatsino limestone formations, an area which contains karst sinkholes, intakes, resurgences and underground streams.   We will visit two or three areas, which involves a bit of driving on logging roads and bush walking.  We will not be walking in caves.
Meeting Place Heriot Bay store parking lot for car pooling. High clearance vehicles will be preferable.

Description This is a fairly flat, but quite long walk through forest and along creeks and wetlands to the Stramberg old growth trees. About 12 km, about 4 hours walking.

Dogs? Dogs are welcome as long as they will stay by you or on a leash.  Best to assume there are wolves in this remote area.

Description Drive 3 km west of Campbell River to the power station. Park and hike 2km to Elk Falls and return.  Round trip 2-3 hours.

Wild Mushroom Foray 2 November 2013

Description Local mushroom enthusiasts will lead field trips to collect and identify Island fungi (to the extent possible with local expertise).  Emphasis is on identifying safe edible mushrooms.
Meeting Place Meet in the parking lot of the Quadra Community Centre for a 10 a.m. departure (car pooling)
Departure Time Please arrive by 9:30 a.m. so that we leave by 10.
Difficulty Easy
Costs Cost: $10/person.  Special Package price for Workshop and 2 forays: $45/person.  Members of either Club get an additional Package discount of $5.00/person to $40/person. To obtain the discount on either package, you must submit your paid registration by September 30, 2013.

Trip Photos – Kayaking Granite Bay to Small Inlet 7 Sept 2013

Four paddlers departed from the Granite Bay dock in quite dense fog, complete calm and quiet.  The fog lifted after about half an hour and conditions were idyllic.  We paddled to the end of Small Inlet, stopped for a snack on the largest island and then continued on to Orchard Bay.  The group explored, basked in the sun and tried out the apples.  Still wanting to paddle more, we went around the eastern island of the Chained Islands in Kanish Bay on the return to Granite Bay.

Trip Photos – Kayaking Main Lake 21 August 2013

Nine club members enjoyed a beautiful, sunny, calm day at the Lakes.  Leaving from the Mine Lake boat launch, we paddled to the northeast corner of Main Lake, landed on the sandy beach and hiked across to Yeatman Bay.  Several of us walked out to the tidal island at the south end of the bay to have a look at the channel.   The paddle took about 55 minutes.  The trail, which is 1.6 kilometres long and in good condition apart from some muddy bits, takes just under half an hour one way. After lunch, about half the group went for a short swim (very welcome as it was hot!), then we headed back to the parking lot, arriving at 2:30.  The lakes seemed busy (at least busy for Quadra!), but it was a very pleasant and relaxed outing. Perhaps on a future trip, we’ll paddle right round Main Lake and possibly venture into Clear Lake or Little Main.

Kayaking Main Lake 21 August 2013

Description Departing from the Mine Lake boat launch, we will paddle to the northeast corner of Main Lake where there is a 1.6 kilometre trail leading to Yeatman Bay.  Following a hike and lunch, and perhaps a swim, we will return to the boat launch by a more or less direct route, depending on the interest and energy of participants.  Not counting travel time to the lake, the trip should take between 4 and 5 hours, including about an hour to hike to Yeatman Bay round trip. The trip is weather dependent  –  I will contact you by 9 p.m. the night before if the trip will be cancelled due to weather.
Meeting Place Mine Lake boat launch
Departure Time Please arrive by 9:00 a.m. so that we can be on the water by 9:30.

Notes: Kayaks/canoes  and equipment must meet Transport Canada requirements.
