Trip Photos – Hiking Nugedzi 2 June 2013

Six people and two dogs hiked to Nugedzi Lakes.  The day was sunny with northwest wind and a perfect temperature for hiking.  There have been a lot of trees blown down in the Nugedzi – Mt. Seymour area over the winter, so progress was a bit slow, but there were no major obstacles.  The trail committee has cleared most of the problems on this trail and flagged detours around the rest. The group had lunch at the lakes and made the side trip to the viewpoint past the beaver ponds on the way down.

Trip Photos – Kayak Quathiaski Cove 26May2013

Five paddlers enjoyed an outing on Quathiaski Cove on May 26.  It was mostly sunny with a light southeast breeze.  The day came with very big tides and currents, which made for interesting paddling even in the relatively sheltered waters of the Cove.  We explored the Cove and enjoyed the pony on Grouse Island, sea urchins, Harlequin ducks, and baby jellyfish.

Trip Photos – Hike Hyacinthe Point and Ridge 18May2013

Eight hikers took advantage of the Kellerhal’s generous offer to hike on their 160 acre property.  The route followed mossy bluffs over Raven Crag and out toward Hyacinthe Point with great views of Hyacinthe Bay, Sutil Channel, and Chinese Mountains.  The lunch stop at Coast Mountain lookout added views to the east.  We also walked to the pond, the beach and the old Schoolhouse.  Rolf and Heather provided excellent commentary about the history and natural history of the area.

Description Hike up to Mt. Seymour, with great views of Nugedzi Lakes along the way, and nearly 270° views from the summit (620m).  Return to the old logging road and continue south to the Nugedzi Lakes and along the trail past the ponds. Using old, unmaintained trails and logging roads continue on the ridge and over Beech’s Mountain.  Descend Beech’s Mountain by the trail leading to the Chinese Mountain parking lot.  About 12 km.  Allow 6 to 7 hours.

Hiking Maud Island 30 June 2013

Destination Maud Island
Date Sunday, 30 June 2013
Trip Coordinator Valerie Van Veen
Contact Info 285-2329; vvv@qisland.ca.  Please contact the trip coordinator prior to the trip.
Description A unique opportunity to see Seymour Narrows from our side, and the site of the once infamous Ripple Rock. Have lunch at the spot where the access tunnels were drilled to create the world’s biggest non-nuclear explosion that pulverized the rock (and assumedly the fish and anything else swimming by at the time).
Meeting Place On Walcan Road, just off junction of Hyacinthe Bay Road and Walcan Road.  I will be in a green Toyota 4Runner. The “new” access is down several kms of rough logging road so good clearance required. We can arrange carpooling and park extra cars in the Morte Lake parking lot if needed.
Departure Time Leave meeting place at 8:30  am; we should then be on the trail by 9:00 at the latest. Unfortunately, the current times are not in our favour as slack is at noon on June 30, but the earlier start should hopefully let us see some action in the Narrows.
Difficulty
Moderate – a scramble up and down over the side of Mount Lolo for the view on way there, narrow steep section on Maud Island; rest of hike gentle to some grade.
Costs none
Trip limits none
Dogs? No dogs.  Sections of trail on Maud Island and Mount Lolo are too narrow and steep to safely mix with dogs.
Notes: Email leader, vvv@qisland.ca, to sign up for this hike. If this hike is cancelled due to weather I will email all registrants by 10 pm night before.

Ever since 2011, use of a new forest access road has shortened the hike considerably to a comfortable 4-5 hours.
