Description This is an easy walk in the woods.  We will walk a logging road which connects the Bold Point/Surge Narrows Rd and Valdez Rd.  It is in the Shellaligan/Village Bay area, but not really part of the trails there.  It is relatively flat and straight.  No views, but it’s probably going to be a rainy day anyway.  This can be done as an out-and-back or a walk through with a car shuffle.  Or part of the Shellaligan trail system could be added, depending on the weather and the group.  Out-and-back would be about 7 km.
Meeting Place Heriot Bay parking lot

Notes: Expecting rain.  Bring gear for the weather and maybe a snack or lunch .

Trip Report – Cape Mudge Trails – 21 Dec 2022

The hike that was originally scheduled was postponed because the cold, snow and ice made it impractical.  We substituted a much easier outing at a lower elevation to avoid the sketchy trail conditions.  It was great to have 10 people participate on short notice for this solstice hike with some excellent sunshine and views.  We met at the Cape Mudge Lighthouse parking and walked near the shore to the Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge and into the forest to the east.  After crossing the dramatic canyon, we came out on sunny, snowy bluffs with great views of Wilby Shoal and Georgia Strait.  We circled back into the forest, crossing the creek and following along the west side of the canyon.

After returning to the Lighthouse, most of us carried on along the Discovery Passage shoreline. The trail passes through a campground and continues north along the shore to the Cape Mudge village.  There are great views and trees along the way.  The wind was quite bracing, but it was mostly invigorating.

These trails are on the lands of the We Wai Kai nation and we thank them for letting us and others use them.  7.3 km; 2 hours

Trip Report – ERT Loop – 14 Dec 2022

We had 10 for this quite long, unusual walk through Campbell River.  Unfortunately the original organizer, Vic, wasn’t feeling well, but wanted the trip to go ahead.  After taking the 9:00 ferry, we walked through town to the ERT (Elk River Timber) trail head and then followed this level route, which feels quite remote even though it is in the city.  Some of the forest is slated for development, so that may change.  There was some hard compacted snow under foot, which was being plowed as we walked.  The ERT leads directly into the Beaverlodge Lands.  There are many well marked trails through this forest and we didn’t have a firmly defined route.  The vague plan was to cross the major road further north and continue through residential areas down to Willow Point.  However, some combination of snow on the side trails and general inattention resulted in us exiting the forest near the Hilchey Rd intersection, so we walked down that noisy, urban road, where the side walks were mostly unshovelled.

Most of us went for lunch at Daves’ Bakery, where the sandwiches are excellent.  Half of the group decided not to walk back to the ferry, with four taking the bus, which was a first for everyone.  The remaining five walked back along the sea walk paralleling Discovery Passage.  This was snow-free, easy walking along a developed promenade.  This walking group returned to Quadra on the 2:30 ferry.  For the Outdoor Club this is a very unique and varied hike. (11.4 km; 2¾  hours to Daves’ Bakery and 7.1 km and 1½ hours from there to the ferry terminal)

Trip Report – Blenkin Park Trails – 7 Dec 2022

Four people met at the community centre parking lot for a walk around the trails. There was still a few inches of snow on the trails, and although it was quite wet snow, it was not too slippery for a good walk. Starting on the Homestead Trail, we left from the batting cage, heading towards Smokey’s  Trail. At the Blackjack Trail corner we headed to the community centre trail and made our way back and forth on the connector trails towards the firehall access. At this point we made our way back on the Homestead Trail to the parking lot.  All in all it was a pleasant 2 hour walk. (6.5 km)

Trip Report – Drew Creek Trail and Rebecca Spit – 5 Dec 2022

It was supposed to be a bright sunny day, but turned out to be overcast and +2° C.  Still seven hikers found it to be a very nice day and beautiful with the new snow. There was only a couple of inches of snow near the water, so the hike was easy. We met at the back parking lot at Rebecca spit and then walked south down past the Sasquatch sculpture and the memorial at Paddy’s Lagoon. We went as far as we could south and then returned by the same route to walk through the campground and over to the Drew Creek Trail. The trail was in good shape and magical with the snow hanging on the trees. We then returned through the campground to the back picnic area to have lunch. We were treated to smoked salmon and oysters, crackers and cheese, blueberry muffins, and mint tea. Afterwards we hiked around Rebecca Spit park. The distant mountains covered in snow made it spectacular.   9.5 km and about three hours.

Please contact the coordinator by Monday night.
Description We will start at the Morte Lake parking lot, cross the road and over the B3 bridge to access the Jackrabbit Trail. This starts off close to the creek and eventually heads inland up to the Yellow Mud Trail, which we will follow back down to Reed Lake at the Walcan Road. We then cross the road and follow the Mud Lake and Tripod connector over to the sandy beach/three bridges area of Morte Lake. This will be a good spot for a snack or light lunch (bring a pad or bag for sitting on the damp log here). From here we will continue to the east end of Morte Lake and start down the main trail to the parking lot. At the Lower Dead Fish intersection, we will cross the creek and continue down to the parking lot. This route is mainly forested with occasional views of the creek and Morte Lake.
Meeting Place Heriot Bay Store parking lot
Departure Time 10:00
Difficulty
Intermediate, due to length.
Costs
Trip limits 10.  We will try to accommodate those who are interested.
Dogs? Yes, but under control or on leash. No running through the group. Owner must carry a leash, for emergency reasons.
Notes: Waterproof boots are advised, as the trail can have standing water. Good rain gear is important, and if rainy or colder, its not a bad idea to bring a thermos with a hot beverage. a seat pad is good idea for sitting on damp logs at the lake. This will go ahead even if it rains, as long as conditions are not too extreme. Bring rain pants for a clear day, as yellow Mud has lots of wet ferns close to the trail.
