Notes: Issues or concerns: no bear cache — need to bring rope; there can be bears. Mice like the tips of camelbacks and try to get in tents. Cable car crossing. There can be wasp nests on the trail and that’s not good for the 2nd or 3rd person.I have tentatively setup the boat ride and will get feedback from someone who is planning on going the week before.  There is info on the web and it is accurate according to a source.  If there is interest please contact Will ASAP, to figure out timelines for boat and hiking details.

Hiking Maud Island 30 June 2013

Activity hiking
Destination Maud Island
Date Sunday, 30 June 2013
Trip Coordinator Valerie Van Veen
Contact Info 285-2329; vvv@qisland.ca.  Please contact the trip coordinator prior to the trip.
Description A unique opportunity to see Seymour Narrows from our side, and the site of the once infamous Ripple Rock. Have lunch at the spot where the access tunnels were drilled to create the world’s biggest non-nuclear explosion that pulverized the rock (and assumedly the fish and anything else swimming by at the time).
Meeting Place On Walcan Road, just off junction of Hyacinthe Bay Road and Walcan Road.  I will be in a green Toyota 4Runner. The “new” access is down several kms of rough logging road so good clearance required. We can arrange carpooling and park extra cars in the Morte Lake parking lot if needed.
Departure Time Leave meeting place at 8:30  am; we should then be on the trail by 9:00 at the latest. Unfortunately, the current times are not in our favour as slack is at noon on June 30, but the earlier start should hopefully let us see some action in the Narrows.
Difficulty
Moderate – a scramble up and down over the side of Mount Lolo for the view on way there, narrow steep section on Maud Island; rest of hike gentle to some grade.
Costs none
Trip limits none
Dogs? No dogs.  Sections of trail on Maud Island and Mount Lolo are too narrow and steep to safely mix with dogs.
Notes: Email leader, vvv@qisland.ca, to sign up for this hike. If this hike is cancelled due to weather I will email all registrants by 10 pm night before.

Ever since 2011, use of a new forest access road has shortened the hike considerably to a comfortable 4-5 hours.
